Human Rights Vaudeville

Human Rights Vaudeville

All the words you like to throw around,

human rights and all the liberties profound.

Say, tell me, do they actually resound,

or are there other rules that matter?

Are they just for show, a clatter?

A vaudeville act to keep us happy,

a trick or two performed with a sideways glance?

A little song, a little dance,
a little seltzer down your pants.

Where’s the leadership in trying times?

Where’s the aptitude to see how history rhymes?

Forgive me, I don’t give a goddamned dime

for the solidarity pretended

when neighbours need to be defended.

You showmen, clowns and vaudeville hacks,

most of you have a much familiar stance:

a little song, a little dance,

a little seltzer down your pants.

You talk like peace is just a tone to strike,

as if the world is just a stage, light and a mic.

But you know autocrats just see a show;

they’ll nod and smile and let the act soak,

till every border’s just a cheap joke.

And it’s not just land they aim to seize –

they’ll smash democracy and steal the keys.

A little song, a little dance,

a little seltzer down your pants.

Help me buy more ambulances by sharing the songs that support my fundraising.
