In almost every small town we pass, there are these memorial sites for fallen men and women. I reflect on how each human being is a miracle – a universe of experiences, memories, thoughts, feelings, and insights. The loss manifested here is huge. These are also places that manifest the grief and longing of wives, husbands, daughters, sons, parents, relatives, and friends.
I also think of the thousands of civilian victims and all the abducted children who are not visible here. Nor are the countless atrocities of war.
These places are overwhelming. The broader perspective is unimaginably cruel.
