Tens of thousands have given their lives defending Ukraine against the Russian invasion. On the Wall of Remembrance surrounding the Mykhailivsky Monastery, their faces look back at us — a silent testament to courage, sacrifice, and the cost of freedom. In my part of Europe, we take freedom for granted. But democracy and human rights are not free — if we fail to understand how precious freedom is, we will lose it, sooner or later.
