I’ve joined forces with a group based in Löddeköpinge, just outside Lund in southern Sweden. These people are experienced in buying ambulances and getting them delivered to Ukraine. This will be their ninth – and my first.
It’s a fine Mercedes with plenty of space and a modern electric stretcher (which costs almost as much as the vehicle itself!).
It feels good to know that this ambulance will help save many lives in Kharkiv, eastern Ukraine. Kharkiv is a city under constant threat, and ambulances there are essentially a consumable resource. When a building is hit in a missile strike, Russian forces often wait about 20 minutes – just long enough for the rescue workers to arrive – before launching a second attack on the same location.
The fundraising for ambulance number two has already begun! If you listen to and share my songs, you’re helping the campaign gain momentum. Both I and Blossom Tainton (Pick Up the Guitar, Sasha) sometimes get the chance to mention Ukraine on the radio and in blogs and podcasts – and that wouldn’t have happened without the songs.
